‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ is what we call an out-and-out clichéd, formula flick with a love story, comedy, villains, opposing parents and a happy ending. But because of the way all these ingredients have been put together, the film delivers on its promise to give the audience some laughs and some cute romantic moments.

‘APKGK’ has a 9th standard drop-out Prem (Ranbir Kapoor) as the protagonist. He is the president of a Happy Club, which helps people in solving problems in their lives; more specifically love lives! But strangely enough, he can’t help himself when he falls for Jenny (Katrina Kaif). The first love shows the relationship building over a series of events, Prem helping Jenny every time. Jenny starts considering Prem her closest friend but Prem keeps falling deeper in love. And then she reveals there is another guy Rahul (Upen Patel) she likes and wants to marry. Despite that, a heartbroken Prem decides to help Jenny.

‘APKGK’ is filled with hilarious situations many of which are scenes which we have seen in Rajkumar Santoshi’s only other comedy ‘Andaz Apna Apna’. For example the last fight sequence is completely borrowed from ‘Andaz Apna Apna’. None of the movies are comparable though on primary plot line. This film is fuller on emotions, even though it is set in an unreal world, where people have time and money both!

‘APKGK’ is shot really well and edited in a comic book style. It has great songs. But these songs are the biggest problem in the movie as most are completely mistimed. The film could have been easily shortened by around 15 minutes if we took them out and yet stayed as hilarious and enjoyable. Many of the dialogues are repeated from other films but still they are done well.

But what makes the film rock is the lead character, Prem. Ranbir Kapoor not only breathes life to the character but also the film. He is brilliant as he shifts between emotions and making a complete fool of himself. Katrina too comes up with a good performance. The rest do well too.

‘APKGK’ is a good romantic comedy after a long while. Its strong point, apart from Ranbir, happens to be its clichéd settings. It slacks in parts but in totality stands out as a complete entertainer. The only question that we wanted to ask the director was how Upen’s character gets an MBA from the University of London when he had gone to Canada for studies. Correspondence? Inconsequential problem of course, especially for a film which derives its strength from being completely unreal! Let’s welcome Santoshi back to comedy, surely a welcome change from his regular hard-hitting movies.

PS: Catch Salman Khan as himself and Katrina as his crazy fan!
