Rating: *1/2
Either Hrithik Roshan must be lucky or very intelligent. A news report that was published before the release of this film said that Adhyayan Suman was trying really hard to get in touch with the star to invite him to the special show. And Hrithik just didn’t respond to any of his calls. Good for the blue-eye-boy, this film is not worth wasting any time on. And certainly does not merit endorsing!
‘Jashnn’ comes with a pretty regular basic story of a poor boy and a rich girl falling in love. Hardships follow and finally the battle is won. Of course here the protagonist is a struggling musician who is ridiculed by people. And he is dependent on his sister. Notably, one of Hindi cinema’s best known classics ‘Pyaasa’ had earlier dealt with an artiste’s search for an identity. Sadly 50 years after that many filmmakers are yet to understand how rejection could affect a person. ‘Jashnn’ reduces the protagonist to a ‘guy with a loser attitude’. His fight is not paid any heed to. Rather the makers tend to get too involved in his relationship with his sister and his love story. ‘Jashnn’ turns out to be a completely misdirected movie with enough bloopers. For one, the friends of Akash (Adhyayan) reveal that his tune has been selected for the ‘Voice of India’ show. And towards the end they seem to have forgotten that and go to the ‘Great Indian Music Challenge’! Also the final competition which is supposed to award the winner Rs 10 lakh has just three competitors. Worse, the Rs 10 lakh award is supposed to be given by T-Series and the judge is from another music company. Sigh!
The movie does have a winner character – the one that of the sister. Shahana plays it with class. That’s a good addition to a very regular story. Shahana plays a mistress to a rich man and has completely lost the intention to work for her needs. Her scenes with Adhyayan also bring out the best in the actor. Apart from Shahana, however, there is hardly anything good about the film. The characters are badly sketched. The music does entertain to some extent but it is inconsistent. The film is mysteriously badly packaged than regular Vishesh Films projects. There is nothing extraordinary about camera work and editing. It has some good dialogues but they do not work most of the times.
The problem with ‘Jashnn’ is simple. The director duo fails to take the story anywhere. As mentioned earlier, they focus more on other details than the struggle of the protagonist, which is all the film was supposed to be. The first half is completely wasted with no development whatsoever in any of the characters and just as you think the second half could change all that, you are let down miserably. The second half, especially the last fifteen minutes, turns ‘Jashnn’ into a B-grade film. The screenplay just does not work.
‘Jashnn’s’ highlight is Shahana Goswami who puts in quite a performance. Humayun Saeed shows promise as he portrays Anjana Sukahni’s rich brother. Adhyayan and Anjana do well.
Overall, Jashnn is a completely avoidable fare and quite a letdown. ‘The music within’ claim holds no truth. Nothing to celebrate here!
